Using the satellite view of Google Maps I have been looking at the Hexham High Wood area W of the town. There is an interesting feature in the field about half way between the wood and the A69, and about half way between High Wood farm and Coastley (the grid reference is 905652): running diagonally across the field is a row of circular features that look like mineshafts or bell-pits. Can anyone tell me what they might be?

They are marked as ‘old coal shafts’ on this c. 1860 map https://maps.nls.uk/view/102346476#zoom=5&lat=8503&lon=2579&layers=BT
