GuestCurious if anyone might recognize this building; my great great great grandparents, James & Ann Armstrong, lived in Hexham in the 1870’s. I had reason to think it was at 2 Skinnersburn (now Eastgate), but modern and historical photos don’t seem to match that address. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

GuestLooks like one of the sets of houses that was pulled down to make way for new flats at Kings Mews, nr old grammar school site…not sure though

GuestI’ll put your query in our forthcoming newsletter, but are you certain that it’s of a Hexham house? Chapeltown is not a Hexham name

GuestI believe the “Chapeltown” inscription is where the photographer, Parkin & Son, were based out of – not where the photo was taken.

GuestRear inscription handwritten on the back of the photo – “This is a picture of the house in which your great-grandmother and grandfather lived when your maternal grandmother and grandfather were married. They lived there for awhile, and then went into their own house.” I believe the note was written to my grandmother, possibly sometime in the 1950’s. Her grandparents were Thomas Liddle and Ann Armstrong, married 1870; in the 1871 census, they lived with Ann’s parents, James Armstrong & Ann Summers, in Hexham at 2 Skinnerburn. It could very well not be Hexham, but the bones of the story line up – although the picture certainly doesn’t look like any of the ones on Eastgate, and if the inscription was written 70 years after the fact, it’s quite possible some facts may have been confused.
