Does anyone know the history of building on Elvaston Road, Hexham. We have just bought a property there and we are fascinated by the range of large houses and the style of architecture.
    Thanks !

    Hi Steve

You don’t say whereabouts on Elvaston you live but the general development started after the First World War. I’m not sure when, by sometime between 1895 and 1920, St Wilfrid’s Road was cut through from Battle Hill. The OS map for 1920 shows the houses on St Wilfrid’s and The “Saints” development on the right of Elvaston Road and the first 6 builds on the left, to the immediate south of Haining Croft; they appear to be one detached and 10 semi-detached dwellings. There is one further semi-detached further to the south along with Overstone in splendid isolation. The rest of the development shows generally 1920s & 1930s styling. The map can be seen online at https://maps.nls.uk/view/102346668
