I have been led to believe that the alley way, to the right of what is now Clarks shoe shop, and goes through to the top of Hallgate , has a name. I think that down the alley it was the either the entrance to the Sun or the White Heart. Does anyone know the name of this alley way.

I’m not aware of a name, and nothing is shown on a detailed Hexham street map. The alleyway does go from Fore Street to what used to be the Goose Market (the cobbled area before you get to Hallgate), so maybe there was a name associated with that?

The alleyway is between Nos 12 and 14. I believe the Sun Inn was No 36 and there is another alleyway there. The White Heart was around No 44, so again not associated with the “Goose Market” alleyway.

There are a number of photos of both alleyways in the Fore Street Gallery of the Photo Archive: https://www.hexhamhistorian.org/historic-hexham/photograph-archive/photo-archive-choices/hexham-choices/streets-choices/fore-street-gallery/

The Sun was where Nero’s Coffee shop is. Clark’s shoe shop was originally the Red Lamp pub. 44 Fore street was indeed the White Heart but when Robb’s took over The Red Lamp took its name and license. When The Abbey Hotel, which was a temperance hotel, was bought buy Fewesters in the 1960’s and renamed the Beaumont, I believe, they took the old license from the Red Lamp.

    Philip Clark.
