Hi, just wondering if anyone can help? I am looking for a children’s home that was in the Hexham area covering the years 1933 -1938 for girls under 5 years of age. Would appreciate any information or ideas where I could look.
    Thanks Carole

Childrenshomes.org.uk list two children’s homes in Hexham, both formerly workhouse homes but by the 1930s taken over by the County Council. One was at Portland Lodge, on the road west from the town centre, the other at Fellside to the south. Mount Royal, on the Allendale Road between Hexham and Lowgate, was a Barnardo’s home but didn’t open until after 1938

Hi Carole, I have been to Northumberland archives to search through the Fellside record to see if I could find my grandmothers name in there, as she was put into a children’s home in 1930 and was baptised at Stagshaw chapel, born in Sabdhoe so we believe she would of been in a children’s home close by ..however we can’t have access to the record so won’t find out that way. Because the 1930 census was destroyed by a fire we can’t search that way..We found my grandmother on the 1939 electoral roll back with her mother and grandparents
