My grandfather Jack Forrest was the Chairman of West Sleekburn Welfare Football club when the team was very successful in the then Northern Alliance. They vied with Cramlington Fc for the top spots in the league over the 1946 to 1949 seasons and as a youth, I watched West Sleekburn play against Hexham Hearts on a number of occasions. The only thing that sticks out in my mind is that Hexham played in black and yellow squared shirts! I think Hexham did quite well in the league in the late forties, early fifties but tailed away in the late fifties, as indeed did West Sleekburn. Both teams and The Northern Alliance League are no more and the village of West Sleekburn disappeared along with the Colliery in the early sixties. I think you will gain quite a bit of information if you research ‘The Northern Alliance’.
