Hello everyone, We have just joined the society although we’ve lived in Hexham for many years. We’ve always been too busy to take part, but now is the time!
I am writing a book at the moment, and need some extra material about the original situation of the Hexham sanctuary crosses. Like Beverley Minster and Durham, Hexham was a Chartered Sanctuary, which meant (among other things) that the area covered by its ‘peace’ extended far beyond the bounds of the Abbey grounds. The northern cross used to stand on the banks of the River Tyne, since it was impossible to place it in the middle of the river. Does anyone have any information about this?
Many thanks
Julia Grint (Draper)
