HiAll, My name is Paul White , I was born and bread in Hexham , my family go back some centuries in the town and are infact still there today. Ive been researching my family history and Iam onto my grandad ( mams dad ) . He was born in Dunbar in 1884 then married my granny in Hexham in 1920. My grandad Alexander Burgess was a boxer and I know he used to fight the local farmhands for money on market day. Do you know where this would be as I presume it wouldnt be in the market square or am I wrong ? Iam just trying to see if theres any info on these fights .

    Thank you in advance

    Paul .

It is more likely that the bouts took place in the Mart (the livestock market) rather than the town’s Market Place – although that is not impossible. At the relevant time, the mart was on the eastern edge of town, where The Range store now stands. As such bouts were unlikely to be officially-approved, it seems unlikely that they would have featured in the local papers.
