Does anyone know how I could access archive copies of the Hexham Journal for the years 1942 to 1948 – or any other local paper during that time which covered Riding Mill? My mother and her sisters were growing up in Riding Mill at the time and I’d like to cross-reference diary entries with local paper reports that are mentioned. Many thanks for any help.

The Hexham Courant and the Hexham Herald are available to browse on microfilm at Hexham Library (a rather time-consuming process!) As far as I’m aware neither of them are available online for the years in which you’re interested.

If you have access to newspapers via FindMyPast or the British Newspaper Archive you might pick up some information via Newcastle newspapers such as the Daily or Evening Chronicles which are both online: I’ve just taken a look and there are passing mentions of some Riding Mill events there.
