I wonder if anyone had any info (pics would be fantastic) on the pub that used to stand on the A6079 where Carrs garage used to be, opposite what is now the Station Inn. On an 1865 map the pub was called the Railway Inn. It still existed in the late 50s because my Dad took my Mum there when they first met.

I’m not aware of any photos of the Railway Inn but this is the information contained in our listing of Hexham’s pubs. The names are of the licencees taken from trades directories

The Railway Inn Hollow Meadows/Station Road, now the site of a car showroom, had a quoits pitch. 1841 Joseph Dufour; 1847 William Riddle; 1855-1864 Mary Riddell/Riddle; 1886 Hannah Sarah Riddle. Known at its closure in the late 1960s-early 1970s as The Tavern

I remember this pub as the Railway Tavern referred to as the Tavern. It was still open in the late 1960’s.

My Paternal grandmother was the licensee in the 1930s before taking over The Pineapple in Nun Street N-o-T. She died in May 1951 at 10 Dilston Avenue(son Roland’s Home). Her other son John William lived at 14 Burswell Avenue.

Hi Ron. If you could give us your grandmother’s name, we’ll add it to our records of the pub.
