Good afternoon,
I was recently gifted a Longcase Grandfather clock whose painted face states “W. Alexander Hexham”.
I was wondering if anyone is able to give me any history of Mr (or Mrs) Alexander. In particular, I was wondering:
Did they have a shop in Hexham (Jewellers, Clockmakers) or perhaps just a Workshop?
Did they make clocks or does the clock face simply tell us the Retailers name?
Would the Movement have been made elsewhere (I have been unable to ascertain any makers name inside)?
Would the mahogany case have been made locally (I know that often, clockmakers employed the services of the local Undertaker)?
Best regards,
Mark
