The modern-day picture to the left is from a slightly different position on the road than the old image on the right, and the colours are better. Also, someone has nicked all of the chimney pots. Nevertheless, the building similarities are apparent, particularly those on the right-hand side.
In Wood’s 1826 map of Hexham, Eastgate is called Bone Street. No doubt, something to do with the activity on that street at that time, but does anyone know exactly why it had that name? Post your reply below.
