Two Gentlemen Photographers: Edward Backhouse & John Mounsey

£9.00

Edited by Mark Benjamin and Peter Rodgers, Two Gentleman Photographers: Edward Backhouse & John Mounsey: images of Hexham and Dukes House from 1864.

Victorian gentlemen Edward Backhouse and John W Mounsey provide a picture of Hexham and the Dukes House estate overlooking the town from the south decades before the more celebrated local photographer, J P Gibson, was at work. Their photos portray mid-Victorian Hexham, and Backhouse’s amusing sketches show the intrepid Victorian traveller around the time that Thomas Cook was starting package holidays abroad. An introduction and summary biographies of Backhouse and Mounsey complement the photos reproduced here for the first time.
